Today is groundhog day!The first Groundhog Day was celebrated on Feb. 2, 1887, in Punxsutawney, Penn., according to history.com. The tradition has roots in the ancient Christian tradition of Candlemas when clergy would bless and distribute candles needed for winter. The candles represented how long and cold the winter would be. Germans added to the tradition by selecting an animal to help predict the weather. But it wasn't the groundhog used now, it was the hedgehog. After coming to America, German settlers in Pennsylvania continued the tradition and made the switch from hedgehogs to groundhogs, which were plentiful in the state. On Groundhog Day, our old friend the groundhog emerges from hibernation and makes a prediction about whether winter will bring more freezing weather this year. Folklore has it that if the groundhog sees his shadow, he will go back into hibernation and the freezing weather will continue for a few more weeks. If not, warmer temperatures are on the horizon. Breaking News: He didn't see his shadow and so the prediction is an early Spring! Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week" the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans.
President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Friday Video ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ASB: Valentine's Day Grams - Send a sweet treat to your friends, CMS Staff, or even yourself.
