April is National Poetry Month The Academy of American Poets in April 1996 launched National Poetry Month. It is a special occasion that celebrates poets’ integral role in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets, marking poetry’s important place in our lives. Poem in Your Pocket Day was started in 2002 in New York City as part of the city’s National Poetry Month celebration. Then in 2008, the Academy of American Poets made the initiative national, encouraging individuals across the country to join in. We will celebrate poetry by creating pocket poems and displaying them in the hallway for all the enjoy. All month long there will be different events in the library as well. For links to a selection of poetry sites check out the Poetry Page on the library blog. Take some time and savor a poem for yourself. Poem in Your Pocket Day April 29th Every April, on Poem in Your Pocket Day, people celebrate by selecting a poem, carrying it with them, and sharing it with others throughout the day at schools, bookstores, libraries, parks, workplaces, and on Twitter using the hashtag #pocketpoem. We'll be sharing as well. Magnetic Poetry will be at lunch in the library during the week of April 22nd to 26th. What's magnetic poetry? Well it's: individual words—often related to a particular theme or topic—printed on small magnets which can be creatively arranged into poetry on a metal surface. Shel Silverstein Week April 22nd to 26th. At lunch I will have: Videos of Shel reading his poems. Magnetic Poetry materials for creating poems Black-out poetry materials (pages from weeded library books and markers) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ASB: A Tisket A Tasket, Don't forget to bring items for your Basket! NOTABLE WOMAN OF THE DAYfriday videoHappy Birthday Dr. Seuss!!!
Happy Leap Day 20242024 is a leap year, meaning Thursday, Feb. 29 is a once-in-every-four-year event. Since leap years typically happen every four years (although there are some exceptions), our last leap days were in 2020 and 2016, and the next leap year will happen in 2028. And since this is a day that doesn't come around often, people are celebrating in different ways, with businesses offering special deals in commemoration and others finally celebrating their Feb. 29 birthday. TODAY'S NOTABLE FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
**Be Responsible **Be Respectful **Be Safe **Be a Positive Contributor ** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Read Across America Day is Saturday which is Theodore Geisel's (also known as Dr. Seuss) birthday. The National Education Association launched Read Across America in 1998 as a year-round program to celebrate reading. Given Dr. Seuss’ impact on the reading world, his birthday (March 2) was declared Read Across America Day. Tomorrow is a day to honor Dr. Seuss's memory by dressing up as a character from a book written by Dr. Seuss. The class that has the most students dressed up will receive a special story and visit. If there is a tie then there will be 2 special visits. (Mrs. G has instructions on how to make a Cat in the Hat hat in the library). Drop by the library and pick up a Wacky Word search that has many of the unusual words Dr. Seuss created for his stories. Just for fun! An interesting fact about Dr. Seuss ~ A friend bet him that he couldn't write a book using 50 words, and that’s how “Green Eggs and Ham” came to be. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MESA Club: Today in Rm. 11 at lunch ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Library Lover's Month!
